Technical Approach
Technically, key components of the PAST system are:
- The mobile Client application (Compaq IPAQ) working with the Pocket Interent Explorer.
- The communication infrastructure, which includes both a wireless communication layer
(enabling the communication between the pocket internet explorer running on handheld PCs
and the server-side applications installed on the local PAST Servers and an Internet communication layer,
supporting web-based communication for desktop computer.
- A server-side set of advanced applications, the core of the PAST system.
The server side modules of the PAST system are the core of the system. They are:
- A PAST Archaeological Repository, i.e. an XML-enabled Object Oriented
Database storing relevant data extracted from legacy multimedia databases.
- A Visitor Profiler application which gathers basic information about visitors,
autonomously profile them and dynamically revise and refine the profiles,
based upon visitors' behaviour during the visit
- A Visit Organiser application that schedules a visit, dynamically revises such schedule and,
at any point during the visit, pro-actively suggests the best route through the physical site and
through the PAST distributed information space.
- The Human Computer Interface application which retreives from the database the multimedia data required by the
Visitor Organiser. The Human Computer Interface displays these data as dynamic web pages that can be properly displayed both in
palmtop and in desktop
- The CD Creator devoted to the extration of the mulitimedia data from the database and
the preparation of the CD of the visit
